NATE Certification

North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification is one of the most recognized credentials in HVAC. It proves you have the hands‑on knowledge, training, and professionalism required to work safely and effectively. Whether you’re new to the trade or already experienced, NATE helps you strengthen your skills, build trust, and advance your career.

Who is NATE?

NATE, headquartered in Arlington, VA, was founded in 1997 and is the nation’s largest non-profit certification organization for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration technicians. NATE is the only technician certification organization governed, owned, operated, developed, and supported by the HVACR industry.

    ✅ How NATE Exams Work

All NATE exams are computer‑based, multiple‑choice, and timed.

    🌟 Minimum passing scores:

    • Core and Specialty Exams: 70%
    • CHP-5 Exams: 70%
    • Senior Level Efficiency Analyst: 75%
    • Ground Source Heat Pump Installer: 70%

If you don’t pass an exam, NATE allows you to retake it after a 30-day waiting period. If you passed one part of your certification requirements (such as the Core exam) but failed the Specialty exam, NATE retains your passing score so you only need to retake the specific exam you missed. However, you must successfully pass the remaining exam within a strict two-year window from your original test date, or your credits will expire and you must retake both parts.
